INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

What foreign trained attorneys need to know to enter the contract attorney field in New York (similar rules may apply in other states).

Foreign law students are typically required to meeet the following requirements in order to practice law in the U.S.

Education

• Matriculation from a University program in your home country earning an L.L.B.
• Matriculation from a law school program in the foreign applicants home country.

Exams

• Bar Exam passage in the foreign applicants home country.
• New York State bar exam passage (or the state bar for the U.S state you wish to pratice).

The New York State Board of Bar Examiners requires the following documentation to qualify to sit for the New York Bar Exam

• Applicant must have work authorization to practice law in the U. S.
• Univerity and law school transcripts.
• Contact New York State Bar and request Foreign Student Bar application.
• Deliver form to University and Law School.
• Pay required transcript fee to University and Law School.
• The University and law school will mail the form to the New York State Bar.

The New York State Bar will confirm your eligibility to sit for the New York State Bar. Once you have passed the Bar, provide placement agencies with your bar admission certificate. For information on assignment etiqutte go to DosandDonts
